Art Transcends Boundaries: We Are Stronger Together

Updated: Jul 5, 2023

BOOKBUTTERFLY Book Review of Drawn Together by DRAWN TOGETHER is beautifully written by award-winning Minh Le and giftedly illustrated by award-winner Dan Santat

Initially, when a young Vietnamese American boy must visit his grandfather's house for the day, he appears respectfully unamused by the experience. The two differed in countless ways, from food choice to entertainment; they seemed to have nothing in common. However, their most significant barrier is language. Although they were in the same house, they felt miles apart until finally finding common ground through their love of drawing and each other. Pictures enable the two to communicate, equivalent to how picture books intercommunicate with their readers through images.

Note:

Encourage your child or student to concentrate on the dedication and title page of "Drawn Together" because that is truly where the story embarks. Thanks to the contribution of pivotal illustrations by legendary artist Dan Santat.

Undeniably, young readers will enjoy how the first three pages of this tale contain no words. Therefore, they must receive context clues about the story and characters solely through the elaborate drawings. I love how the author and illustrator use symbolic images such as giant monsters and massive cliffs to signify the real-life barriers between grandson and grandfather. And how even though they had different art styles, they realized that their differences, when united, made them fearless amongst all they thought, had the power to divide them. The two manage to communicate without words through pictures (a metaphor for picture books). And the results are an eternal bond between grandparent and grandchild.

Drawn Together, skillfully written by Minh Le and brilliantly illustrated by Dan Santat, is my best friend's favorite book to read to her grandchildren. Although they speak the same language, they are generations apart. But quite comparable to the book's characters, they enjoy learning and growing together. At forty pages and one hundred and twelve English words, Drawn Together is a sweeping and relatable tale for all.
