Ultra-Modern Book Review of Mozay of Pepperwick by Jean Perry

At first glance at his scrawny features, Mozay may not look like a hero to readers. Nevertheless, at only fifteen, he possesses all the courage, intellect, selflessness, and mental tenacity he needs to finish his assignment.

Spurred on by his mentor’s death, Mozay is determined to travel, receive an education, and become a teacher, storyteller, and writer. Sounds great! The only problem is it's 1853, and Mozay, a half-African, half-Sioux, all-American enslaved boy, lives on the Pepperwick Plantation in South Carolina. Aware of his circumstances, he tries to escape. But with no plan or assistance, he is quickly captured and severely punished. Beaten but not defeated, Mozay begins writing letters for the enslaved people in the rice field and teaching others the alphabet. Unfortunately, no one on the plantation can help Mozay obtain his freedom—or is there?

Mozay of Pepperwick is a superbly written debut book from experienced writer, journalist, and educator Jean Perry. Inspired by the oral history of her enslaved grandfather, Perry creates a classic historical fiction monomyth featuring Mozay Deas. She successfully transports readers to 1853 South Carolina through accurate and thoughtful depictions of characters, locations, and factual references. Furthermore, Perry does a marvelous job incorporating action and adventure into her hero's journey.

Mozay, an unlikely hero, is a likably optimistic book character for middle schoolers. I admire how Mozay never allowed the cruel world to alter him. Instead, he remains a kind, responsible, respectful young man, helping others find their way to freedom and knowledge. Perry packed the book with facts about slavery for middle school students, and there is a reference section in the back for readers to explore further. I had a wonderful time scavenging the text in a game I created, "Fact or Fiction."
