ULTRA-MODERN BOOK MARKETING Book Review of Mirrored Images

by Chyrel J. Jackson and Lyris D. Wallace

In reverence and much appreciation for masterful Black poets of our time, Chyrel J. Jackson and sister and co-author Lyris D. Wallace create a body of work that fuses autobiographical with historical accounts of today’s Black experience in America through spoken words in Mirrored Images.

The sister's sophomore book "spits" unadulterated truth as they embark on a healing journey through the life and death of their father. The women share the joys and fears of motherhood, providing their Black children with love while protecting them from the world’s cruelties. Likewise, in their first book, Different Sides of the Same Coin, love is a big topic: Black love, family love, and self-love. They also dive into the emotions felt during death, breakups, Covid-19, social injustice, politics, and spirituality, all in conjunction with the trials and tribulations of our people, which seem never-ending. Lyricists Jackson and Wallace are again victorious at incorporating a musical rhythm into their poetry.

If you’re reading Mirrored Images out loud, you’re singing the blues. The work is part lyrical and narrative with a rhythmic harmony that is all the blues. I love the sister's choice of diction and dialect. I can't help but feel enlightened from the experience of reading Mirrored Images. I do not know what is next for these heroic authors with their poetic superpowers, but I will be there.
