Inspired by actual events, LaLa Speaks lends his voice and pen to the present-day issues plaguing America in, Cries of a Society. A poetic narrative cohesively produced with LaLa Speaks compelling political poetry and his unequivocal protest poetry. The author educates us on the effects politics and greed have on the nation. Several poems plunge into the origin behind the current outcry from citizens as they rally for equality and justice from their elected officials. LaLa Speaks hears the call of the people, and he responds with, Cries of a Society. Powerfully written poems such as Elation, Feast, and Focus hooks portray a moderately bleak present, filled with rage and angst over government hypocrisies. His lyrics are so vivid that I felt I was currently reliving the situation; verses so dramatic they almost threw me into a state of hopelessness. Luckily, every poem ends with a brighter solution for tomorrow. The author also has beautifully and strategically interwoven love poems and spiritual hymns amid the explosively charged political/protest lyrics, exposing readers to the author's altruistic side and genuine optimism for humankind. In essence, LaLa Speaks supports humanity and teaches us through his poetry that if we trust in the Lord and love and care for one another,

the world could be a better place for us all.

I am often intrigued by an author's background, especially while interpreting poetry, and this particular collection is no different. The writings of LaLa Speaks, an African American father, and 13-year military veteran, are an essential perspective. Readers might experience a cluster of emotions, anger, fear, sadness, and even disgust at the current situation, but I assure you will also feel love, happiness, light, calmness, peace, faith in God, and the future of humanity while reading, Cries of a Society. And isn't that the whole premise behind poetry, ultimately, to feel?
