Book Review of How to Be an OUTSTANDING Physical Education
TEACHER: The Stories of MAD Teachers Who Make A Difference
Edited by Artie Kamiya
First, I must start by thanking all my prior Physical Education teachers.
"Sorry, Ms. Taylor, sorry, Mr. C., I have to chalk that up to being a teenager."
"How to be an OUTSTANDING Physical Education TEACHER: The Stories of MAD Teachers Who Make A Difference," Edited by Artie Kamiya, is an entertaining compilation of 39 P.E. teachers' professional experience and knowledge of the field. He debunks the myth that the only thing P.E. teachers do is play games with students. The book concentrates on P.E. teachers and provides excellent examples of integrated instruction with STEM and homeroom teachers. In addition, P.E. teachers share remarkable stories of fostering school camaraderie and community involvement with programs like PEACE (Physical Education And Community Engagement).
How to be an OUTSTANDING Physical Education TEACHER: The Stories of MAD Teachers Who Make A Difference" is a fun book and teacher resource. I enjoyed learning creative icebreakers, P.E. activities, amusing short class rules, networking/P.E. conferences, social media pages, lesson plan ideas, SHAPE, Standards, and so much more. My most notable takeaway is that physical education in school is often a child's first introduction to physical activities or exercise. Physical education teachers work hard to create lessons that foster physical literacy and a lifelong appreciation for fitness in our society.
