Ultra-Modern Book Review of Lost and Found by Natalie Shampanier and illustrated by David Pavon
As night falls in the deep dark forest, Dino Boy realizes he is alone at summer camp. To his dismay, all the children had gone home. Dino loathes being without love, and to make matters worse, a hand picks him up and takes him to a place where lost things are left: the Lost and Found.
Determined not to become a permanent loveless object on a shelf, he devises a way to escape and find his forever home. At first, Dino Boy thinks he’s alone, but then he hears the voices of Moody the Mood Ring, Hamburger Hippo, and Tina the Ballerina. Dino found these new friends in the lost and found, too. They struggled with overeating, depression, and anxiety. But Dino soon learned that these friends also desired to feel love and were willing to go on a thrilling adventure with Dino to find it. Along their quest, the quartet will discover their strengths and learn to use these exceptional qualities to help one another.
Will a new family welcome these precious toys, or will they remain together at summer camp forever?
Lost and Found is a sweet story inspired by the genuine fortitude exhibited by author Natalie Shampanier who counsels as a family therapist for adopted and foster children. Through sharp rhyme, Shampanier conveys a compassionate story about four dynamic characters determined to pave their own way.
Lost and Found is exciting. I loved going on adventures with this unlikely group brought together through their shared goals of finding love. Watching them uncover friendships and overcome challenges along their journey was a joy! My biggest takeaway was how the characters used their past "flaws" as strengths to help themselves and others. They did not let pain define them, realizing they were so much more than their past or pain. I also enjoyed the lesson of keeping your heart open to love and better opportunities in the future.
Lost and Found is an excellent rhyming composition tailored to early-childhood students. However, it is also appropriate for first and second-grade students because of the author's usage of site words. What adds to the allure of this children's book are its clean detail and vivid colored illustrations, which is evident even in dark scenes. Illustrator David Pavon did a great job following the story and creating enchanting settings. Shampanier and Pavon have created charming, enduring characters that will last a lifetime.
