The children’s book I Looked to the Moon, written by Heidi Jo Thweatt, is a fantastically written, lyrical tale of an intimate conversation between a young boy and the moon. Inquisitive, genuine, and full of enthusiasm, the boy asked the moon several innocent questions: Is it okay to be sad? Why are we all so different? The great moon reassures him with compassion, patience, wisdom, and sound advice about feelings, emotions, kindness, character, and acceptance. The illustrations are by award-winning Dayna Elefant, who uses watercolors, bold tones, and fabulous detail to bring this charming story to life. The author uses rhyme to delve into some thoughts and questions children might have.
I loved this book because it is warm-hearted. It is essential that Thweatt made the main character a boy who shares concerns about expressing his feelings. In our society, it is still somewhat taboo for men to convey their feelings, and I love how this book lets little boys know that it is okay to show and share their emotions.
The advice the moon gives the young child is sweet, innocent, and non-religious, making it a great addition to any home or class. I Looked to the Moon is an excellent book for pre-K through third-grade students. I love this book as a bedtime story. Hopefully, your child will take away that it is appropriate to ask questions, express emotions, and accept themselves and others for who they are.
