Lila and the Visitor is a captivating story of how simple acts of kindness can lead to significant blessings. One day, while waiting in her front yard for her best friend, Clementine, Lila meets Sarah. She learns that Sarah is a sad girl with no one to play with. Lila enjoys making new friends and invites Sarah to join their playdate. The three girls are having a great time playing in the snow when Sarah suddenly insists they stop. Reading the worry on Sarah’s face, Lila’s mother insists they all go inside and make hot cocoa. Just moments later, the sound of a crash interrupts their conversation.

Lila and the Visitor is an exceptional book in Kathleen B. Williams’s God Speaks series. As an author and educator, Williams creatively uses the contemporary character Lila to convey timeless stories from the Bible in a relatable way for children. The colorful illustrations make the young readers feel like they are a part of the story. My favorite part of the book is the discussion between mother and daughter about the tale of Abraham and how it relates to their earlier blessing with Sarah—it is beautiful and touching. Additionally, the book features a song (This Little Light of Mine), a maze game, scriptures, and a prayer for children. It is an exciting and engaging book that children will enjoy reading and learning from.
